City of Keuruu
A LITTLE HISTORY OF KEURUU
Keuruu is a city of waters and forests.
It gained its first permanent inhabitants in the 1560s after Gustav Vaasa had given his mighty order to inhabit the wilderness. The wilderness holdings of the people of Satakunta and Häme were dominated by Savonian plantations, for which the untouched forests of the area provided the most ideal living conditions.
The independent parish of Keuruu became in 1628.
Previously, it had belonged to the administrative parishes of Pirkkala and Ruovesi. The southern parts of Keuruu instead belonged to Häme. It was not until the founding of Vaasa County in 1776 that the area was administratively united.
Keuruu, the second largest municipality in Central Finland, has over time handed over its territories to many parishes. Both the municipalities of Multia and Pihlajavesi have been separated from it, the latter rejoining its mistress in 1969.
